The receiver collisions phenomenon in asynchronous transmission optical WDM networks of local and metropolitan area scale is examined in this presentation. It is the asynchronous nature of the transmission access schemes that differentiates the result of the conflicts at destination as compared to the synchronous transmission access schemes. Thus, two different WDM network architectures of asynchronous transmission under Poisson and self[1]similar traffic scenarios of symmetric and asymmetric traffic load conditions are presented. In the second network architecture, the utilization of a pre-transmission access strategy over a separate control channel is examined, while an effective WDMA protocol to improve the performance is proposed. The effect of the receiver collisions is extensively studied via accurate mathematical analysis and simulations, in conjunction with the impact of the other parameters that affect the performance: the WDM channels collisions and the propagation delay latency. The presentation results could excite the scientific interest of optical WDM networks researchers and engineers to develop efficient WDMA protocols taking into account the receiver collisions phenomenon.
